10 Rookie Style Mistakes Men Regularly Make In The Office
The little details in the way you dress can have a huge impact on your overall image and how others perceive you which can be quite important if you’re looking to get that next job promotion, woo that cutie you’ve been interested in or even for your own self-esteem.
Below are the 10 rookie style mistakes that men commonly make:
1. Clothes that are too big
This is the most common style mistake that men make. Shirts should be a snug fit to your body while still retaining a free range of motion in your arms. Trousers should only touch the top of your shoes – no bunching of fabric.
2. Cologne that’s too strong
Do your co-workers a favor and don’t marinate yourself in cologne. Limit to two sprays, one for the wrist and one for the neck (these are the areas where someone would come into close contact with you e.g. a handshake or hug).
3. Dress socks that are too short
When you sit down, no part of your bare legs should be showing. Nobody wants to see your hairy legs during a meeting. Don’t wear white socks with anything business/formal related either – they’re a clear sign you don’t know what you’re doing.
4. Tie length is too long or too short
A man’s tie should ideally end just above the belt buckle. Having a tie that’s too short or long can make a man look incompetent.
5. Dirty or worn out shoes
“You can tell a lot about a man by his shoes”. A stylish man keeps his shoes clean and knows when it’s time to replace overly worn out shoes. Don’t wear athletic shoes, crocs, sandals or flip flops with a suit if keeping a professional image is important to you.
6. Belt and shoe color doesn’t match
This is a very common style mistake that most men make. Pair black shoes with a black belt and brown shoes with a brown belt
7. Overly wrinkled clothing
You don’t want to look like you slept in your clothes the night before, this tells everybody you’re lazy.
8. Shirts with armpit sweat stains
Perspiring is natural, unfortunately it makes you look dirty. Wear a breathable undershirt to absorb sweat before it reaches your outer shirt. Sweat still seeping through? Look into merino wool which absorbs and wicks away moisture.
9. Improper grooming
Your face and hands are one of the first things people notice when meeting you. Keep your facial hair cleanly shaved or your beard trim. Keep your fingernails trim and free of dirt
10. Too much jewelry
All the jewelry a man needs is a watch and a wedding ring if he’s married. If you like necklaces then go for it but don’t go crazy with a ton of rings, bracelets and necklaces at the same time as this can make a man look tacky. Limit yourself to a maximum of 3 pieces of jewelry.
During a survey of a group of women, participants voted that the first and most noticeable accessory on a man is his watch. A watch is much more than just a time teller, it represents a mans style, complements his outfits and expresses the fact that he takes care of his appearance.
